# please init<no value>

Initializes a git repository here, and generates please.md.

<!--more-->

```bash
please init
```

Runs `git init` if this directory isn't already a git repository. Then, if an AI provider is already configured, eagerly generates `please.md` — the AI-written project description please otherwise only generates lazily, the first time `please commit`, `please chat`, or agent mode needs it.

{{< callout type="info" >}}
  please.md needs an AI provider configured first (`please setup`). git init itself always runs regardless.

  Most other please commands need an existing git repository to make sense. Run one of them in a plain folder and please asks whether to initialize one right there, instead of just refusing.
